Lyrics by Marlene Palmer
Performance and music by Val Cox
Marlene Palmer. Made from Scratch was my first demo album.
I'm working on Still Scratchin' now.
I don't really have a "band" . It's just me and my guitar. I've asked a few friends to collaborate with me and these songs are the outcome.
Story behind the song
Easy listening country, about a lady and her cowboy.
Lyrics
OL’ BILL
(c) Marlene Palmer/Val Cox 2008
V1. Ol’ Bill taught me to ride, and how to care for my horse
He was there for me when I strayed from the course
I heard he stayed in Benson, back in sixty three
When I headed for Tucson and the university
Chorus:
Ol’ Bill was a cowboy,
I knew him way back when
I was still a girl
He was my best friend
Now he follows the rodeo
I see him now and then
Sittin’ on the East wall
Down by the bull pen.
V2: I married a good man and raised a family
But Bill, he made the rounds, workin’ hard and livin’ free
Now Bill’s hair’s gone gray, and he’s a little bald on top
And he walks kinda lame, with that cowboy hop.
Repeat the chorus
Go directly into the bridge:
Bridge:
Now, it’s La Fiesta in Tucson. It’s the first time I’ve come alone
John died last March, and the kids are all grown
I realize there’s something, I may have always known
So, I walk down to the East wall, and ask Bill to take me home.
Last Chorus:
Ol’ Bill was a cowboy, I knew him way back then
We’ll marry this fall, cause he’s my best friend
He still follows the rodeo, I’ll ride along with him
And we’ll sit up on the East wall....
Down by the bull pen.
