Story behind the song
This song is based on real events that occurred in Humboldt County, California in the late 1990's.
Lyrics
The redwoods were alive and well up in old Humboldt County. 'Til Charles came, and on each tree, he placed a big fat bounty. With the government in his pocket and the cops all eager to please. He brought in all his butchers, and they cut down all the trees. CHORUS: Fire in the eyes. Fire in the eyes. Hold on tight. Don’t give up. This forest must survive. Fire in the eyes. Fire in the eyes. Say a prayer for all mankind if we let the redwoods die. The logging trucks were loaded up with their stolen treasure. And the damage to the forest was impossible to measure. The carnage was enormous—worse than any hurricane. Looking down from her lofty perch, Julia cried in pain. CHORUS Protesters came from miles around to stop the endless slaughter. They gathered ‘round the big old trees—Mother Earth’s sons and daughters. Then one fall day, they stormed their way into the devil’s lair. They locked their arms together, and began to sing a prayer. CHORUS Soon the police arrived, and they put on a torturous display. For instead of releasing them in the usual way. A burning swab was placed into the corners of their eyes. Then a full blast of pepper spray that would make a grizzly cry. CHORUS Eventually, they all let go and were carried off to jail. But, sadly, that’s not the end of this horrific tale. Gypsy’s dead, and Luna lost her sisters and her brothers. And those cops, well they’re still walking free, and so are all the others. The hills are bare, there’s no life there. They’ve been raped and mauled and pillaged. And it’ll take a thousand years to replace this sacred village. CHORUS
