Silhouette
Her hair fell to her waste
As I pulled loose the ribbons
And I untied the lace
At her breast
We unwrapped the layers
Of gingham and lace
And together we lay
In the hay
Slowly
The morning light
Cast a glow on skin
Soft and white
Your love will comfort me
Your memory will stay with me
All the days of my life
In a shaft of light softened
By the dust of the barn
Her silhouette burned
Into my mind
As she moved
To the shadows
A glimmer of tears
Sparkled from her eyes
She said a farmer you are
A farmer’s wife I could be
But my family has made
Plans for me
But your love will comfort me
Your memory will stay with me
All the days of my life
As I sit at the table
Just after dawn
Her silhouette
Comes back to me
My wife slides my breakfast
Onto the table
And says
You look far away
Slowly I tear my thoughts away
My mind echoes
With words’
That I cannot say
Your love will comfort me
Your memory will stay with me
All the days of my life
