Story behind the song
This song was written for the Fourth Sunday of Advent for the St. Matthias Episcopal Church Sunday School program. It's based on the Revised Common Lectionary readings for Advent IV.
Lyrics
Peace Be With You The Angel, Gabriel, came to call on Mary of Nazareth. He brought a message from on high. Young Mary was quite upset. It's not every day a mighty angel visits a peasant girl. And how could she know the marvelous plan Gabriel would unfurl? Refrain Mary, peace be with you. The Lord is with you. And greatly blessed are you! Peace be with you. The Lord is with you. For there is nothing that God cannot do! What did the Angel, Gabriel, mean by what he said? How could it be she would have a son? She wasn't even wed! "You say that his name will be Jesus, Son of the Most High God." "You say that God will make him a king." "All this sounds very odd!" Refrain Gabriel said, "There's not a thing that God cannot do. Like Elizabeth at last with child, you soon will give birth, too." What could Mary say to Gabriel? The plan was preordained. "I am the Lord's Servant," was her reply. May it happen as you have explained." Refrain …There is nothing that God cannot do! Unpublished Work Copyright © 1999 John Whitney
