Story behind the song
Songwriting friend, Ray Thigpen, suggested this title for a novelty country song and challenged PgMusic forum participants to write a song around the theme. This is my attempt.
Lyrics
Refrain You'll put me down the last time, when you lay me in the ground Tell me who will you be kickin’ when the buzzard’s are flyin’ ‘round Your naggin' tongue keeps waggin' like the tail of my old 'coon hound You’ll put me down the last time, when you lay me in the ground Verse 1 Though I find your looks appealing and your cookin’s mighty fine It seems to me that tongue of your is working overtime I can’t do a single thing that’s right or so you say And you think you have to tell me, a hundred times a day Refrain Verse 2 Folks used to say we were quite the pair; well they should see us now You call me your “Old Billy Goat,” while you think you’re so high brow. It wouldn’t matter if I washed and scrubbed from dawn to dusk You’d still harp about my hygiene, and my manly musk. Refrain Verse 3 My job, my truck, my clothes, my Ma are all victims of your vile I sure do wish that you’d lay off for a just little while It’s damaging my self-esteem and my love life, too How’d you like to wake up next to someone as mean as you? Refrain Verse 4 When we first met, I could do no wrong, now I can’t do nothin’ right You criticize most everything from morning until night Why, even in my dreams you’re there knockin' me around You’ll put me down the last time, when you lay me in the ground Refrain
