Story behind the song
This was recorded "live"- while shooting the upcoming film "Gray in White and Black". It is the fourth take, and not necessarily the one to be used in the film, which has yet to be completely edited. In the scene, Paul has been tricked onto the stage by Vera in an attempt to prove whether or not he's been lying about who he is- can he play, or not? The first warm-up notes are not encouraging, but then the music starts... The piece was originally intended for alto saxophone, but I decided, as the actor, that the character's style required another level of uniqueness which the baritone provided both visually and aurally. Also, the sax case is featured prominently throughout the film and- in this case- size mattered. Anyway, Patricia agreed to the bari and this was the result. Working with the Patricia Barber Quartet was simply fantastic- a once in a lifetime experience for me. Patricia herself was wonderfully accommodating to both the film process and mine. We all were actor/musicians for the film. The sax- a 1945 King Zephyr- was purchased on the way from Colorado to Chicago, where the film was shot.
