Story behind the song
I had a co-write with Karleen one day and she threw out this title and I dug it. We had been listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder so we wanted it to have a groove reminiscent of ‘Superstition’ but with more of a rock edge. That next week, we were writing with Jake and threw the idea out to him and he ran with it. By the end of the afternoon, we had ourselves a song. “Firestarter” was a ton of fun to write, one because the lyric is so forward and flirty, and two because Karleen and Jake were a riot! I grew up listening to women artists that sang with ‘balls’, as we would call it…soulful & gutsy. Anything from country to rock to Motown, I absorbed it all and I feel like that is reflected in this song. Not only does this song allow me to tear it up vocally, but I had a lot of fun getting into character. How fun it is to beat men at their own game, ha!
