Story behind the song
This song was up on the website and available for download since last year, but it never a€œofficiallya€ made ita€™s way onto one of my albums. So when it came time for us to sit down and consider which songs out of the ones wea€™ve already recorded would make it onto the new project, this one was a no-brainer for me. This song was my very first solo write, which is a huge accomplishment for me as a writer. I was going through a VERY difficult break up and instead of dancing around it and vaguely writing about it, I just wrote what I knew. The words just kind of poured out rather quickly because I was just writing what I was going through, word for word. I sat on the lyrics and the melody for the chorus for a few days before I finally sat down and finished it. When I did, I got with one of my most favorite guitar players and bestest bud, Joe Spivey (Speeev). And as we sat around in the lobby of the office, he played along to what I was singing. An hour later, we were in the studio putting down a guitar vocal of the song. I was just going to hold onto it for awhile and let that be that. In all seriousness, I never really intended on playing it for anyone, especially my publishers. I was already kind of embarrassed singing it in front of Joe, since it WAS so personal and I was the sole writer. It felt like it was a little too soon for me to let people hear something like that. But later that afternoon, I had a few errands to run and while I was gone, Joe had played it for my managers. They loved it, thankfully. I then started performing it around at local shows and there you have it. We kept the same track from the original recording, but went in and did a new lead vocal. We took out the background vocals from the previous recording because I felt like it needed to be raw and that it sounded edgier and more vulnerable without them. My engineer put a cool delay effect on my voice for a few lines in the chorus and it just breathed a whole new life to the song. I love it!
Lyrics
How Does It Feel
(R. Williams)
I dona€™t cry all night like before
And I wona€™t watch for your car,
Thinkina€™ youa€™ll show up at my door
But I can listen to it rain
And not feel a thing
a€˜Cause I cana€™t hate you anymore
They called it a painful breakup
And I heard it really messed you up
But then if I did to you,
Everything you put me through
Ia€™d take it hard too so
Chorus
How does it feel
Knowina€™ that what I felt was real
But still you gave me the run around
Just to watch my face hit the ground, hit the ground
And how do you sleep
Knowina€™ you took everything I believed in
And shot it all to hell
I cana€™t forgive and forget but despite the fact
I think Ia€™m takina€™ it well
Baby, tell me how does it feel
Yes, Ia€™m well aware that you have called
And to tell you the truth,
Ia€™m a little surprised by it all
'Cause youa€™re the one who chose this
With everything that you did
So now ita€™s your turn to fall
Ia€™m gonna watch you fall and
Chorus
I see her blonde hair, it follows me into my dreams
And I still wonder, what it was about her
That made you want her more than me, yeah
Chorus
Just let me curse your name and never take you back
Oh, Ia€™m gonna hit the walls and burn it all until therea€™s nothing left to tell
Let the whole damn world say, a€œLook at this girl...a€
a€œ Shea€™s sure takin it well.a€
Let everyone think Ia€™m doin so well
Because the truth Ia€™ll never tell
Well baby tell me how does that feel
How does it feel
