Story behind the song
LINER NOTES by bong tan
The Song:We couldve opted for one of the band's countless 80's classics, but that wouldve been a very safe bet, and so too if we chose an obscure b-side, just so we could project a hipper than thou stance :-). Anyhoo, we reckon Krafty is truly a quintessential New Order track. despite being one of their last singles to be released. It still oozes of the bands' majesty, with an elegant synth-riff (even without Gillian on board), propulsive drumming, devil-may-care vocals, and hook-laden bass (with pun intended). Notably, it epitomizes the bands' maturity both musically and lyrically. also. we liked to think that the title could be their homage to their (and ours too) long time musical heroes, Kraftwerk. Personally, the first time i saw 'em perform it on TOP OF THE TOPS, it brought me the same rush as to when i heard Blue Monday back in the day. It made me so proud of my generation, wishing that the current one wont just let 'em slide by, the way they do with most
of the so called dinosaur acts (dammit, we even know kids who dont know who Kurt Cobain is!).To me, Krafty equals beauty, hence we're really hoping that we gave it some justice it rightfully deserves.
The Session:We have a simple approach, as with most of the stuff we do. We do it the old punk rock way (record it live, with little overdubs), and act like you're someone else! Our pretension this time (well. most of the time these days actually) is "what if The Stooges were an electronic outfit, instead of a garage rock band?" Well, this is what we came up with. Now you know more than what we know:-) Try it sometime, you'll thank us for it.
By the way, the Love Vigilantes' lyrics in the coda was an afterthought, coz it was one of the earliest songs we learned and even performed live with back in '89. We reckon its cool to feature a snippet of days past, when sex, drugs, booze, and rock n' roll can be had for a little less shit. Godspeed New Order!
