Story behind the song
Song about the current genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
Lyrics
We have a crisis in Darfur, you can see the genocide
Where the government is killing people like pesticide
But we need a buzz, cuz we don't even question why
We just look at the TV and say "Let 'em die"
Our souls are weak, we need a little exercise
So I run my mouth, close my eyes, and shout about
The women being raped, and the killin' everyday
Livin' locked up with the children in a cage
We try to rock steady but the world is not ready
Cuz the boulder on our shoulders just got heavy
But on the back of a brother is the blade of a machete
Takin' sons and rapin' mothers, even worse they say that every
Day five hundred die, pray for peace
But nobody wonders why to say the least
So I gaze up in the sky, and see the same sun
That burns the skin of Africa, that's why I'm askin' ya
We got a crisis, we have a choice
You can fight it if you use your voice
Throw your hands up, and never be silent
Stand up, to stop the violence
I'm hearin' children's screams, they're creepin' in my dreams
To remind me that their souls are rippin' at the seams
Like stitchin' up some jeans, but they've given up it seems
Cuz no matter how hard they cry nobody intervenes
Cuz when I'm lyin' in my bed, their family is dead
They don't got a roof, they got a canopy instead
They don't got no food, they're barely gettin' bread
And other parents go without so their children can be fed
The sons are seein' guns, the daughters are bein' slaughtered
The mother tries to runaway but the government caught her
Took advantage of her and they ran their hands up on her
Now back at the village a slut is what they call her
Now it's on the father, to try to escape
Why should he even bother, the odds are too great
But he attempts it anyway and when he's pullin' on the gate
He looks up and takes a bullet to the face
We got a crisis, we have a choice
You can fight it if you use your voice
Throw your hands up, and never be silent
Stand up, to stop the violence
To date, over 400,000 civilians have been brutally murdered in Darfur.
Factions of the Sudanese government ransack villages, raping women and
murdering men. This crisis has been going on for years, and it will only
stop when people become aware of the atrocities occurring in Sudan.
So get up on your two feet, march to a new beat
I just want to make you see our globe is more than you and me
I hope that they can find a peace, cuz the bodies line the streets
You think you got it bad? This is a whole new kind of beef
They don't wanna make a move, they refuse to break the rules
They just wanna play it cool, with citizens afraid to move
That's why I'ma pay my dues, use my voice and break a few
Dollars and donate it to a child that can't stay in school
But don't get me wrong cuz I'm not asking you to do the same
But if nobody says a word then you can tell me who's to blame
Use your voice, use your name, use your status, use your fame
Use your money, use your game, so the people lose the pain
Try to make a difference there are people you can write to
Stand up, throw your hands up and join the fight too
Remember that the people dying are exactly like you
And if you just spread the word, you could save a life too
