Lyrics
He said, " Hello, my name is Billy. I know that I aint much. But, mister, can you spare a dollar? To you it aint so much. " Then he went on about his life and how it used to be. I knew this was a kind old men who stood in front of me.
He was grey and old. His body bent from sleeping on the streets. He said, " I used to be a lawyer! I used to sleep on satin sheets. Yes sir, mister, I had it all!
I had a grand old life. A fancy house. Fancy cars.
a couple kids and a wife. But, we used to fuss and fight til she was just fed up. It was my way or the highway.
so, now I carry this old tin cup. "
I said, " Billy, have you ever heard of a man called
Jesus Christ? He can save you from your sins and give you a better life. " He just simply stared, and grinned
a sheepish grin. Then his face lost all expression. Then he smiled again. He said, " Mister, if it were'nt for God I'd give this whole life up. Where do you think I find the strength to carry this tin cup? "
He said, " Mister, I met the Savior in that alley way. And ever since He lives inside, I share His life each day.
I'm here so I may testify about His saving love. So, if you've got more questions mister, you can look old Billy up. "
In my pocket was a dollar. I grabbed it with my hand.
I could'nt walk away and not give it to this man.
He looked like an unmade bed. His hair was all messed up. Yet, we talked for hours and he never tired of holding this tin cup.
He said, " Jesus is the answer, so, never think of giving up. If you're living in a mansion or you carry an old tin cup. "
When Billy died it broke my heart, so, I placed it on a shelf. I etched his name there inside. I put it there myself. It's not a shrine, but, I made a sign,
" Be kind and fill it up. This once belonged to a friend of mine. This is Billy's old tin cup. "
He said, " Hello, my name is Billy. I know that I aint much. But, mister, can you spare a dollar?
