Story behind the song
A song written for someone who had been released from prison. About how we carry our experiences around with us.
Lyrics
Without Walls
Today the sky that fills my sight is a different shade of blue
No more distorting windows to block and bar my view
Standing on a threshold that invites a brand new dawn
But still the dark distraction stirs though faint I hear the call
Chorus 1
The cost has now been counted but nothing's really changed
These twisted twilight tendencies, while buried still remain
We're free to face the future but not to heed the call
The bonds of this dark nature are a prison without walls
The price is paid to wipe away transgressions of the past
While older still no wiser, this absolution may not last
Will this hibernation hold and hide the sleeping beast
Or will the wilderness return unburdened and unleashed
Chorus 1
Beneath this brow a battle burns, weighing risk versus reward
The pleasures of the prize against the consequence if caught
This enforced educaton requires respect in law
But don't confuse a lesson learned with what they think a cure
Chorus 2
So once more on the outside beyond security
Wondering which way to walk and where each path may lead
We're free to face the future but not to heed the call
The bonds of this dark nature leave me always
on the outside
While I'm dying
On the inside
In my prison
Without Walls
