A song that is an invitation to dance with all you are, and to find that which is your dance--written for a bellydancer I know and with those rhythms and flavor.

The Nightbird, Susan Cypher, is a singer/ storyteller hailing from Grand Junction, Colorado. She brings forth a sound that combines keyboards, vocals, and guitar. Her music has arisen from the celtic style with emphasis on the poetry and meaning of the song. The melody derives from the words and dictates the rhythm. Story behind the song
I have a friend (a belly dancer named Jodi) who had been at one of the first places I performed (Planet Earth an art gallery here in Grand Junction) after I started writing this music and stopped being a cover artist. She really liked my music and when she danced she just glowed. She actually danced first to a song I wrote called Nighttime. Well we were both invited to perform at a special all-female art show at the same gallery later thay year and she told me she wanted to dance to a piece of mine. I was highly flattered and looked at the music I had written so far. It was okay and there were a couple that had that gypsy sound that she liked so well in my music but they did not satisfy me. I wanted to write a piece for her. Well I was actually asked to do this at a party that Monday with the party being on Friday. So I actually wrote the song Wednesday, she choreographed it Thursday (and it was the first piece she ever choreographed), and we performed it that Friday, and it was very well received and a whole lot of fun for both of us. In the song I tried to capture what I saw when I watched her dance that first night--a person who danced with soul, body, and heart. However, it also has more to it because it is also about finding your OWN dance, what makes your soul happy. I actually have another friend who is my seamstress and her dance is the needle and the creation of the perfect outfit for whoever she is creating that for. Well it actually succeeded beyond what I expected. She loved it and has taught it to her students here in the Grand Valley as well, many of whom also have told me they love it, as well as "Nighttime" and the other songs from "Songs of the Dark." It has sold many of my CDs, and now there are quite a few women here who have danced to this piece and often do when I play live.
Lyrics
TO DANCE V1: So she danced in the moonlight holding forth her hands. Spinning she danced in the moonlight reaching out to the land. Stars fell and whispered. The leaves swayed in time. Wind sang and beat out a soft ancient rhyme. V2: Next she danced in the sunlight lifting her arms so high. She leapt and spun in the sunlight reaching up to the sky. The clouds gathered round her. Rainbows sprung from her hair. The earth rose to meet her as she danced upon the air. CH: Joy is in her rhythm. Within her heart beats fire. Beneath her feet is hope and peace. It's a prayer that lifts her higher. 4 beat short break V3: As she sways her body becomes the music and the beat. Soon she is not dancing with just her hips and feet. Now she is rising so high above the land. She dances in her soul with the spirit hand in hand. CH: V4: Now she reaches out to you with a smile on her face. Reaching out hands to you with her infinite grace. You too can dance to your heart's own true beat. You too can let its joyous rhythm guide your feet. CH2: Joy will be in your rhythm. Within your heart will beat fire. Beneath your feet will be hope and peace, as a prayer that lifts you higher. For Jodi, Susan Cypher 07/11/2000
