NUMBER 1 ON NEIL YOUNG'S WEB CHART WITH "TAKE YOUR WAR AND STICK IT UP YOUR ARSE" To all those who have been voting/listening - a great big thank you. We are hoping to use this to launch a publicity campaign in the UK media. Let's also not forget that, more important than songs going up charts, we can get this war ended as soon as possible. Sollox and The Spooners have been making music for a long time, but the exposure that the www can give them has inspired them to new efforts. The band are . . . Story behind the song
Did you know that five million men and women from British Commonwealth countries came to fight for Britain during World War II? I'm not certain of the figures for the first World War, but do know that at least a million and a half came from India alone. They weren't called up. They didn't have to join us. They chose to. They came from all over the Commonwealth, a million from Canada; 2.5 million from the Indian sub-continent; from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, the Far East and from across Africa. And now they are suffering.
Lyrics
You sailed across the oceans You sailed to fight on our side We sent you home with nothing Now we’re taking you’re pride CHORUS: Commonwealth Soldier, what have we done to you? Commonwealth Soldier, what have we done for you? Commonwealth Soldier, thanks for taking a stand I hope you didn’t save a mean unpleasant land The mother country wanted help The world war threat was getting bigger Ten minutes in this country Somebody’s calling you a nigger Chorus rpt Bridge: Commonwealth Solider, we had you, fighting on the front line Commonwealth Solider, now we got you living on the breadline Sixty years later I'm not sure if we're that much wiser You get nothing from your country Because you helped the coloniser
