Story behind the song
I was motivated to write it from a violin piece my dad recorded a while back and it just always stuck with me. When ever I heard it I pictured an old man on a bench that was thinking back over his life.
Lyrics
The Old Man Amadeus Durbin © Initiating Time warp Picture the old man as he sits down to write/ /down to think, on what his life was once like/ begins to drink. Lips to bottle sweet acohol till it's hollow. Follow the mind of a genius through his years in life Take turns guessing what a living legend looks like Not what he used to. But that he can get used to. what he can't the friends he kicked it with are all gone only this beat in his head and a lonely song the violin plays/- the park is green and sunny he's run out of money/ but he thinks it's all too funny the way he called her honey/ the way she called him love/ the way they fell in love/he grips tight at his gloves/ the cities filled with flying cars/ they report a man on mars/ but all he sees is the music in the bars/ the drop in the notes/ the ball in water that floats/ lyrical motes/protecting a true artist/ but noone marvels they bit the next trend and now he doesn't fit in it's funny he used to make the crowd rock/ but now all he's got is a bad hip and he can't hop/ no rap nas was right we didn't heed the warning and now it's storming from global warming/mosquitos are swarming/hasmat suits w/ no timbaland boots just futuristic cops programmed to shoot/ the citizens are required to salute/ is this what it's come too? chorus: Picture the old man as he sits down to write/ /down to think, on what his life was once like/ begins to drink. Lips to bottle sweet acohol till it's hollow. A:Follow the mind of a genius through his years in life Take turns guessing what a living legend looks like Not what he used to. But that he can get used to. B:Follow the mind of a man reflecting his life This is what a living legend sounds like Not what he used to, but this he can get used to what he can't the friends he kicked it with are all gone only this beat in his head and a lonely song The holographic ball drops in times square/but nobody's there where did they go/ he doesn't know/ he's standing alone/ looking around surrounded by city he's overwhelmed with pity and sorrow for a predictable tomorrow/ all he has left are dreams from the past/ trying to make them last/but they're fading/ he buys a memory enhancer to help aid/ plugs it in he sees a parade in his mind/ from that time his parents took him/ track two senior prom track three he keeps waiting to see the first time he heard an emcee/oh wait back yeah there the fugees/ he sees a boy open the packaging and listen with wonder/ never knowing one he'd be under the spell to spell words that rhyme. in 4 4 time/ this what's on the mind of Amadeus/ And I pray they play this. When I become that man with pen in hand looking over a crushed and devastated land/ but yet still the power to understand where it went wrong/prophetic words in this song/ And He's Gone...
