Story behind the song
Robb and I are beaurocrats. We administer government programs for the poor. Every day, we meet people who have lost everything, or never had anything to begin with. I wanted to write a song for those people.
Lyrics
When people are at their whole, and everything's come undone. When all their friends are at their worst, the people have something to hold on to.
Makes you wonder, everybody needs something to hold on to, filled with wonder, to help you sing your song.
When people are held up ransom, and all of the money's gone. The government takes their blood money, but people have something to hold on to.
Makes you wonder, everybody needs something to hold on to, filled with wonder, to make you sing a new song, baby.
I wanted a piece of the good life, like I see it on my TV. I got a little piece of the real thing, it's biodegradable.
And it makes me wonder, everybody needs something to hold on to, more than money, to make your groan when you're tired.
When people are losing their places, why do they hold their breath? Funny people with blue, blue faces, those people got something to hold on to, and it makes me wonder, yeah.
Makes me wonder, everybody needs something to hold on to, more than money, to make your groan when you're tired.
Makes you wonder, everybody needs something to hold on to, filled with wonder, to make you sing a new song, baby now.
