Reviews:
"Progressive rock orchestration collides with reggae roots and jazz for a freestyle exhibition of fun, rhythm virtuosity, and social consciousness. The feeling of the music is the best part of it; there's a pureness of intention and emotion that really comes through their live performance." --Loretta Millazzo, News Chronicle, Thousand Oaks, L.A.--
"Collage of i played lots of intricate rhythms and socially concious lyrics and have become popular with a divergent group of people, from reggae fans to Deadheads to lovers of jazz."
--Russ Spensor, News Press, Santa Barbara--
"...it is almost as if "The Force" is really with them as one minute you are calmly wading through a soft reggae texture only to come through and find yourself in Brazil or South Africa...Collage of i will remain forever young, forever present, and forever above the "FAULT LINE!" --Eugene Pidgeon KRQR FM--
GUY'S FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
"Collage of i -- Closed out the whole Deal. Special Guests Jerry Hannan and Jose Neto. Massive happiness... Darryl leader of the band asked me how was it afterwords? It was almost hard to say ... except sensational. What was all that noise that everyone was dancing to so joyfully? I don't really know it could have been great music. It all came and went bringing a ton of smiles."
-Guy Meyer- excerpt from LifesignsPhoto.com
"Collage of i owes much of its influence to YES and Peter Gabriel as it does to the music of Youssou N. Dour and Fela Kuti." --Eugene Pidgeon KRQR FM--
Throughout the 80's and 90's: Collage of i's eclectic band has performed hundreds of shows throughout The West Coast. The group featuring DarrylJoyce, has been a collaboration of some of the West Coast's best music performers who come together to form new versions of the Collage of i band.
Band Biography
Originaly Collage of i was an unusual 4 piece group with Joyce on keyborards ,Adam Steinberg on Chapman Stick,Stan" Stosh" Glowacki on drums, and Ted Morrow on percussion. The group rapidly reached the top of the Santa Barbara music scene in the mid-eighties after hundreds of college parties followed by several key appearences with National acts at the Graduate, U.C.S.B. and Downtown in the growing S.B. Music scene. In 1989 the band faced a serious set-back when one of thier prominate members, percussionist Ted Morrow, was tragically killed in a house that caught fire in the U.C.S.B Collage town, Isla Vista. With the faithful support of the local community the group continued on,and was joined by one of the greatest drummers of this generation "Bucket" Baker who at had point had never played with an unsighned group, but at 22 years old ,had performed with Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, and SammynDavis Jr. Later he would go on to Tour with Kenny Loggins,Boz Skaggs, Erika Badu and many othersincluding much work on several John Carpenter films.
Needless to say this incredible drummer put the band back on the map after the the loss of Ted Morrow.s unmatched talent and personality.
In 1992 after joining forces with the Bay area band Gahundza, featuring Monroe Grisman on Guitar, and Creek Hart on drums. Collage of i recorded thier first EP under the direction of engineer Dave "db" Dennison who is known for recording and mixing all of the David Grisman/Jerry Garcia albums on Acoustic Disk Records.
After re-locating to San Francisco, Collage of i changed once again with a new line up featuring Joyce,Monroe Grisman, Paul Ezekial on drums, and Gabe Harris on percussion.
After meeting at the a Lord Buckely Festival in 1990 Joyce and Gabriel Harris set out to create a whole new Collage of i in the Bay area. It was new venture where the band would have to break into a new scene with a new line-up. San Francisco and Towns like Mill Valley,San Rafael, and Fairfax are premier night spots north of S.F. Clubs like the The Sweetwater, 19 Broadway, Fourth Street Tavern,New Georges, and Peri's were still kicken from the old days, and getting better by the month', and somehow Collage of i wedged itself into a new local identity where they have been based ever since while traveling throughout California, Colorado. and the North West.
Collage of i played many shows and watched a few clubs shutdown, change their owners, or, just got bigger and better. The band followed suit,
In 1994 the group overhauled once again with Reggae Great Rich Nelson on Guitar, and reknowned bay are bassist Shelby Snow. Once Again the group broke back into the scene and brought the group past the 10m year mark since its eightees beginnings and was soon known as a "90's" band. But it wasn't until 2000 when Joyce re-wrote and recorded the band's theme song, "Fault Line", for the internet. Now, the band would get international exposure and recogintion for a sound which has lasted nearly 2 decades. After an early version of Fault Line reached #53 on Gargageband.com a New and improved cut reached #1 for 4 months here on Soundclick.com and continues to draw fans after all these years.
In 2001 the band is re-inventing itself once again
with more new music to come.
