Bands start for many reasons: girls, drugs, free booze. Subjective Well Being merely wanted Pop Tarts.
Hi. We were Subjective Well Being, a three piece rock band from Hot Springs Village, AR. Even though we are no longer active, we are leaving this page up so that if anyone ever come across these tunes, they can still take a listen. We still check back here every once and awhile, so leave us a comment or a note and tell us what you think. Thanks for ten years of rock and roll!

Story behind the song
Ben: So yeah, I realized that we did this whole collection of songs that we think best showcase who we were as a band and I never updated the information. So here I am, doing it now, late at night by only the light of my battered laptop. I guess that is cool. So "Sex and Violence", eh? This was a song that Russ wrote that Taylor and I really liked but we never paid a lot of attention to as a collective. We played it a few times in practice and we thought, "yeah, that's how it should sound. Moving along." Anywho, we recorded this for a record that we did entitled "Radio: The Basement Tapes Volume 2". Taylor had to record all of his drums early on because he was leaving for Spain, and Russ and I decided to just overlay our parts at a later date. A few weeks down the road Russ laid down the guitar and told me to play my bass part which was, originally, far more simplistic. I made a mistake and tried to catch up, and that's what you hear here. Surprisingly that one little mistake gave the song this extra dimension I think. I tried to record it again and play it tighter but I was never able to top that first take, so it's still here. You can hear me play in a higher key occasionally, just because I was making it up as I went along. I think this is one of Russ' best vocal tracks, as well as one of the best pure rock songs he wrote. I really like the simplicity of the song and his lyrics. He did a helluva job on it, I think. RUSS: This song came about simply because I wanted to write something on the guitar that was really punchy and basic as compared to the more involved stuff on the record. Originally it was all guitar, but in the mixing process it was dually noted that the bass and drum interplay was too funky to not be prominent. The words were used to show an extreme case of pop-culture over-bombing, and the strong inclination towards sex and violence as marketing tools in american media. Plus some good old fashioned dis-associative paranoia for good measure.
Lyrics
Switchblade slides in closer Scraping the edge of your vertebrae Death rattle has got me shaking Can't seem the words to find to say I see you moving like you mean it Do you need it just like me? Plug me into the wall I get my fill of sex and violence from my T.V. So give me torture Give me murder Give me bloodshed Give me sex and violence on my T.V. I'm so excited, I can't hardly wait I turn the dial, I'm so hard-on for hate I never leave this house No one ever seems to call So many holes in the basement From beating my head against the wall Russ: Vocals, Guitars/// Ben: Bass/// Taylor: Drums
