For over 40 years I played lead guitar and did back-up vocals in various country bands. It has been one of the greatest thrills of my life. But, these days I stay at home and compose songs, both lyrics and music. My writing style is much broader than just country music. I also write southern rock, a little blues, lots of smooth jazz and movie themes and even some latin music. I have been writing for about 20 years and hope to for quite a few more years.

Story behind the song
First, this song is written from my wife's point of view about her deceased father; thus it is intended to be sung by a female vocalist. My wife and I were traveling between Tulsa, OK and Muskogee, OK back in the winter of 2000 when somehow the conversation turned to our deceased fathers. Helen's father died in 1987; my father died in 1968. She began crying when she realized that she could remember all the wonderful things he meant her, but she could no longer remember what his voice sounded like. The third verse probably needs a small amount of explanation. Helen was the only girl with 8 brothers...thus the reference of "to me and to the boys". He also was barely literate, so he "told" nursery rhymrs to Helen and the boys, rather than read them. He would tell the ones he could remember from his youth, plus he made up many original ones that always entertained Helen and her 8 brothers. Everytime Helen hears this, it brings a tear to her eye. Hope you enjoy tghe listen!
Lyrics
Daddy (c) January 2001, Alan D. David, BMI All Rights Reserved (v1) I wonder if he ever knew Exactly how I felt How that certain special smile Would always make me melt I know he wasn't perfect No better than the rest But to me he was Daddy In my heart he was the best His hands were rough and calloused From working all day long I didn't always understand But in my eyes he did no wrong He wasn't always easy Didn't always show his charm But it always gave me comfort When he held me in his arms (CHORUS) I don't go to see him As often as I should I'd stop by to visit More often if I could But the tears always blur my eyes As I read his name in stone Daddy won't you wait for me Someday we'll all be home (v3) It breaks my heart and makes me cry Cuz I can't recall his voice Or the nursery rhymes he used to tell To me and to the boys How I wish that I could tell him How I miss him so But somehow deep inside my heart I think that he might know Repeat Chorus
