Story behind the song
I was driving from NY, to Chicago in a truck with a guy I didn't get along with. I couldn't listen to the radio so as I sat, stewing in my own venom for 8 hours, I started writing this song in my head and then sang it to myself over and over until I landed in a place where I could write it down
Lyrics
A lot of people look at me and think I must be gay,
Just because I wear my hair this way
Momma brought me up not to conform
'Cause both my older brothers died in uniform
She said,
"Son, it's your life to yourself you gotta be true,
And if they don't like it, tell 'em, 'Fuck You!'"
That's what Momma told me
That's what momma told me
A lotta people look at me and think I must be weak
Just because I learned to turn the other cheek
"There ain't nothin' in life worth killin' for, son,...
Just ask yer daddy when you visit him in prison"
"Yes there'll always be someone
who don't like the way you live,
You ain't gotta forget but you oughtta forgive"
That's what Momma told me
That's what Momma told me
Momma tried hard to teach me right from wrong
Then she'd tuck me into bed at night
and sing me sweet songs
You may think that makes me a momma's boy
But I'm the only thing left
she can call her pride and joy
That's what Momma told me
Yes 'n Momma taught me all about the Golden Rule
She said,
"You tolerate them and pray they tolerate you!
But, son don't ever let 'em try to jerk you around
And if they push you too far
ya' gotta take their ass down!"
Yes 'n it's my life, to myself I'm gonna be true
And if you don't like it well then, Fuck You!
'Cause that's what Momma told me
That's what momma told me!
