I tried very hard not to write this song. I had two verses and the chorus and told myself I wouldn't write a song this sad. It refused to let me go until it was on paper. My singer couldn't get through the song without crying. My eyes still tear when I listen to it. I think it needed writing.
Lyrics
Their Toys Will Lie Unopened
Their toys will lie unopened
Beneath our Christmas trees {Chorus
A much-awaited holiday
Our kids will never see
Parents with hearts broken
Hit by a senseless blight
Rooms untouched or visited
Except on winters night
A brother or a sister
To whom we can’t explain
The tears and words of anger
That never touch the pain
Their toys will lie unopened
Beneath our Christmas trees {Chorus
A much-awaited holiday
Our kids will never see
The way you people justify
The consequence you cause
When even just the very thought
Should serve to give you pause
The driver of that yellow bus
Had followed every sign
They never even stood a chance
You flew across that line
How come you didn’t call a cab
To take you safely home
Our children would be living
Till they were fully grown
Their toys will lie unopened
Beneath our Christmas trees {Chorus
A much-awaited holiday
Our kids will never see
{Instr.Brk
What on earth gave you the right
To take their lives in hand
We all know drunken driving
Is not what makes a man
Now what’s the mirror show you
How can you stand the sight
A fool who didn’t think before
He grabbed his keys that night
Their toys will lie unopened
Beneath our Christmas trees {Chorus
A much-awaited holiday
Our kids will never see
A much-awaited holiday
Our kids will never see
