Story behind the song
While waiting overnight in the St. Louis bus terminal, a homeless woman two rows behind me died. Before the ambulance came someone stole her purse.
Lyrics
He sits all alone in the evening gloom. Dozing away in this cold dirty room. As the mute masses Pass him by. His baggy brown pants spill out of the seat. And onto the sneakers that cover his feet. He stirs rather slowly but doesn't awake. Chorus: Why Old Man do you sit and stare? Looking at things no longer there. What do you see? A childhood dream? A loving girl and a home that was clean? A future ahead that was hopeful and bright? But now you face death... and the darkness of night. He wakes up and wipes his nose with a sleeve. Then puts his head down, between his knees. And waits for the morning to light up the sky. He spits on the floor then stands up to yawn. Alone with his thoughts in the widening dawn. And walks off to face another dull day.
