Story behind the song
Evoking strong visuals, this highly descriptive music was written for a student film on the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia, scored apart from picture. I had in mind the parts of the documentary focused on the uprising, especially when the leaders of the movement begin to stir their people toward resistance. It opens with an urgent, unsettling rhythm in the strings and woodwinds, punctuated by the timpani and brass. A gradual layering of instruments climaxes and subsides quickly, setting the stage for a noble trumpet call.
