Story behind the song
I wrote this tune many years ago, when I was still single. I had this
cat, a big old Maine-Coon. He had big buck-fangs, and long grey-striped
furr that always seemed to be matted. He looked like a miniature grey-
striped saber-toothed tiger on a bad-hair day. His name was Fuzz Bear. I
got him when he was just a kitten. I was sitting around in a biker club-
house with a buddy who was a member. This clumsy ratty looking kitten
was jumping around on things. He hopped up on one of the members "colors"
which was laying on a chair and started to sharpen his claws on the jacket.
The biker it belonged to pulled his .45 out of his shoulder-holster and
was gonna blast the kitten. I stopped him and said I'd trade him a bag of
some primo 'Nam pot for the kitten. He said that was cool, and so I got the
cat. I named him Fuzz Bear because he was pretty fuzzy and ridiculously
fierce-looking with his little buck-fangs hanging out of the sides of
his mouth. I had him a long time. He used to like to sit next to me and
just howl his head off when I'd play harmonica, in harmony with me. As he
got bigger, he seemed to be a hit with the ladies. Every place we lived
soon had a few Fuzz Bear-looking kittens around before long. And he always
would establish himself as the "top-cat" of the neighborhood. All the other
tom-cats would cross the street when Fuzz Bear was around. We travelled
around together quite a bit for way over ten years. One day me and Bear had
just moved into a new place. I was sitting on the porch playing my guitar,
and Bear was sitting on the sidewalk surveying the new territory. This cute
little angora female came up and walked around Bear a couple of times as he
watched her. As they kind of interacted in their own cat-language, this
tune pretty much wrote itself. Ol' Bear used up the last of his nine lives
a long time ago, but I still think of him whenever I sing this tune that
I call "Fuzz Bear's Blues."

FUZZ BEAR'S BLUES (COOL CAT BLUES)
by Me (1970-ish)
Well excuse me, pretty kitty, I'm a new cat in town.
I've had nine lives' worth of living. Yeah, I've really been around.
So now don't take this wrong, and don't put me down,
But you're the finest pussy I've come across in this town.
Well now, the way you walk with your tail held so high
Just drives me crazy as you strut on by,
So if you ain't doin' nothin' I'll just hang around
And take you out on a cool cat's night on the town.
(Bridge)
We'll take a stroll down an alley, share a mouse or two.
We'll roll in the grass wet with midnight dew.
Slink down the street in the pale moon-light.
A cool cat knows how to treat a hot cat right.
(Back to verse-form)
So now, Kitty, don't you gimmee that "drop dead" stare.
I can smell that sweet smell of romance in the air.
Take a chance, take a gamble, take a walk with me.
It must be love, Honey. Just what else could it be?

(Actually, leaving the 1 and 2 strings
open changes those last three chords from
simple 7ths into something else, but I'm too
lazy to figure out what to call 'em!)
This repeats three times in a verse, the last
time resolving to an E-chord 022100 and then
some kind of little Em-pent lick and then you
sort of turn around into the B7#9 X21230 except
the round before the bridge and at the very end,
where it just ends on an E (or E7 or 9 or what
ever sounds good to ya).
(It's not hard to hold both the 5 and 6 strings
with the middle finger tip at the same time with
just a little practice, but you can do it how
ever feels best of course.)

The bridge part in the IV position (A-based)
uses a sliding A6 slid back to a A7sus which
is actually the same shape back two frets.
(Same as a G6 but leaving that 5th-string
open makes it an A7sus)...
