Why are our true skills never valued in the 'marketplace'?
Committed and passionate singer songwriter of new songs from traditional inspiration
Berni is a singer songwriter of passionate and committed songs.
Story behind the song
I recently joined an Internet forum. On one thread we discussed why one of our number, an obviously talented woman in her forties should already be considered "on the scrap heap" - this song is the result of the development of that thread.
Lyrics
What do you do? Oh what do you do,
When even Ikea don’t want you?
When you’re over skilled for the game of life,
And yet nobody sees your value.
I’ve done the courses, I’ve paid my dues,
But they say my talents aren’t needed.
I can’t even get a job stacking shelves,
My prayers are never heeded.
CHORUS
I’d try working for myself,
But officialdom, I dread it,
Permits cost what I would earn,
And banks refuse me credit.
CHORUS
I make beautiful things from cloth,
I speak a foreign language,
I’ve raised my kids to be decent folk,
But those things don’t pay the mortgage.
CHORUS
