Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Brian is young, 19 years old/
Fresh outta high school as the story unfolds/
There's the girl, of course, the girl named Jen/
They' been best friends since the start of grade ten/
He lives for her, first year uh college/
Got away from his dad the alcoholic/
It's a new life, done away with pain and strife/
At the end of the tunnel he sees a brand new light/
He's thought about kids, he's thought about marriage/
Pictures Jenny rollin' up with a baby carriage/
And tonight's the night, on his way to her place/
Hops on to his bike, can't wait to see her face/
It's out of the case, he grips the ring in his palm/
Twists the wrist, accelerates, hummin' his favorite song/
While she lies on the couch, with a pen in her mouth/
There's nothing to do without Brian around/
Lost without the feelin' of comfort, he brings/
That boy's been heart stealin', but he makes her heart sing/
He kick's it up a gear, and hugs the center line/
About to propose, it's just a matter of time/
[Verse 2]
He peers in his rear view, it's rush hour traffic/
The city is booming with soaring demographics/
One carriage in particular, catches his eye/
Pullin' up quick, is a large semi/
But it's not just a truck, the pilot has a face/
Name's Carl Phillips, colleague in the rat race/
Lost his job on the rigs, 'bout 3 years back/
Settled for this, triple shifts back to back/
Got a wife and kids in the apartment where he lives/
If he has it, it's theirs, all he's got he gives/
Finally on his way home, it's been 6 days/
Slowly weaves 18 wheels 'round the Calgary maze/
One thing on his mind, his 3 beautiful girls/
4, 6, and 7, his personal pearls/
Half hour away, once he's out of the city/
Missin' supper again, it's really a pity/
Then it all changes, world will never be the same/
As the bikes plastic fender connects with the steel frame/
Carl didn't see him there, Brian didn't see it comin'/
While Brian hit the brakes, Carl kept runnin'/
Flew 15 feet to connect with concrete/
The twisted bike sputters and admits defeat/
The streets stand still as they behold disarray/
Clink clink clank as the ring rolls away/
All those plans begin to fade, as they're smothered by death/
And Jenny's heart beats, as Brian breathes his last breath/
[Outro]
Now every night when Carl sleeps Brian dies in his dreams/
As he remembers the street, and the bystander's screams/
Sorry, but the story gets worse, Jenny took her own life/
Down the same street drives the hearse, where she lays, almost a wife/
It never should have happened, they're lives were far from complete/
But Brian's blood trickles down 107 near 101st St./
