"It's been 20 years or more and it'll be 20 more before he gives it up. 'Cause it's not what he does no more, it's what he is and he loves and he lives it up." Country Music Hall of Fame That about says it.

Story behind the song
I found an old watch my Daddy used to wear and I noticed similarities in the watch and Daddy. This was quite an emotional song for me...started it not long after my father passed away.
Lyrics
This old watch was my Daddy's I found it in his things. It's just a simple timepiece with wheels and gears and springs. To everybody else I know it may not look like much. But I see all the places that were worn by my Daddy's touch. It occurred to me as I held the watch, how much it was like him. The outside worn and battered but on the inside were some gems. It was not an expensive watch even when it was brand new. But it's hands were never idle, and the time it kept was true. This old watch was my Daddy's he wore it on a chain, it was all he had to leave me, along with his good name. Now this old watch ain't worth a lot, but it brings back sweet memories, of the kind of man my Daddy was and the love he had for me. Well, it's hands are still and silent now, but its work is still not through. For now it's not a watch at all but a compass sure and true, to point the way that I must walk, so that some day in time, my son can know the way to go, by following close behind. You don't see many like it now, for the time has long been past, when men wore pocket watches and your word was meant to last. I hope I can be half the man, my Daddy used to be. Then my son can stand a half a chance of being half as proud of me. Chorus
