Story behind the song
I was single, working in Silicon Valley and not doing well in the protocols of the Bay Area social scene, so I wasn't getting the kind of attention I was looking for. Combining that with watching a lot of football inspired me to write Time Out.
Lyrics
Why is it I lose myself when I meet someone like you? I always end up walking away because I don't know what else to do. It's your move; or is it mine? How do I set up our next meeting? No strategy or coordination, I think my team is losing. Time out. I don't know how to play. Time out. What are the rules of the game? Stop the clock. I see my chances slipping away. What am I supposed to do to make them want to see me? How can I exist if no one wants to be with me? Thank God for email, or else I'd lose touch completely. And then there's voicemail for calls that won't get returned. My phone it never rings, so I'll turn my music up real loud. Then I won't hear you when you call, and I can cry a little harder. Time out. I don't know how to play. Time out. What are the rules of the game? Stop the clock. I see my chances slipping away. Gotta show ‘em that you're interested, and don't act like a jilted lover. Be casual and mystical, irresistable, manipulative! Time out. I don't know how to play. Time out. I hate this game. Time out. I used my last time out. Time out.
