Singer/Songwriter in the tradition of classic country artists. A little humor and a whole lot of heart.
I've been writing songs since 1974. Over the past few years, I've participated in open mic's whenever possible and have become active in the Nashville Songwriters Association International ("NSAI").

Story behind the song
I was talking to new friends. Reno was mentioned in conversation and I tossed out the observation that "Reno Ain't Hell, but it's close enough to see sparks!" ... a song was born!
Lyrics
Becky was a lady 'least she was when we first met Back about a long lifetime ago The two of us both knew enough to recognize a sucker's bet Something 'bout the devil you don't know Two hearts left alone too long can only take so much We all only have one life to live Truth is, truth is something she could never stretch enough To face a man unwilling to forgive Made her mind to tell him hoping he might understand Thought she knew him like she came that night to know the back of his right hand Made it into Reno Her life reduced to echoes in the dark Working the casinos The pain in her perfected to an art Unable to pretend The end of her sure had a damn good start Reno ain't Hell but it's close enough you can see Sparks A gambler's life had lead me to a place of last resort Nothin' left to lose and one hand left to play Forever one day late and at least a dollar short Come to find her dealing cards my way I touched her arm to stop her 'til she finally held my eyes A sad smile seemed to struggle to her face The card she had to offer was it love or luck or lies? Pushed back my chair and walked out of the place All these years I've wondered where it is she might have gone? Guess she always held the hand my future turned upon Made it into Reno My life reduced to echoes in the dark Working the casinos Without a plan ain't nobody that smart Bottled up emotions And a notion you should finish what you start Reno ain't Hell but it's close enough you can see Sparks Becky was a lady ... 'least she was when we first met ... © John Tolley All Rights Reserved
