Story behind the song
Sun Records wanted a new rockabilly song, so I wrote a follow-up song to Ballen Keen.
Lyrics
Well, you heard the story 'Bout Ballen Keen, And the fight they back in Tennessee. Bulldog disappeared when the lights went out, But I saw something I wanna tell you about. I was down in Texas last Saturday night, At this honky-tonk when they started a fight. The front door opened and a hoss stepped in, Said, "I'm six-foot-six, and I'm back again." Then the place got quiet, and the fightin' stopped. And they was all lookin' at him; you could tell they was hot. He said, "Boys, I'll make it short and sweet. I'm Bulldog Johnny from my head to my feet." Then somebody said, "Let's take him right now," But before they could move, there was three of them down. Bulldog Johnny was comin' in fast, With a right and a left, and he was kickin' some ass. There was three on the bar, and four on the floor, Them boys got more than they bargained for. When the fightin' was over, Bulldog was left Standin' on the floor, all by hisself. Then he breathed a sigh, and he wipes his brow, He said, "So long boys, the fun's over now. Y'all ain't tough and y'all ain't mean, but I know one; they call him Ballen Keen." I'll tell you somethin' else that I heard and seen. Cause I was there that night, back in Tennessee. The rockinest fight that you ever seen, Was when Bulldog Johnny met Ballen Keen.
