Story behind the song
'Littleton Cafe' was motivated by a visit to a small-town diner in New Hampshire and by the characters that I saw there. It's really hard to tell when you look at people what their stories are, but this song captured what I imagined about a couple of them. More importantly, writing this song made me think about holding on to what is most important in our lives..."hold on to your dreams".
Lyrics
Sitting at the counter of the Littleton Café A gray-haired man sips coffee, waiting for his meal And staring off in silence, his eyes fixed in a gaze He thinks about a young man less than half his age It was a year for sorrow in a nation torn by rage It was the year of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King It was the year that he turned eighteen, the first and last year of his life A year defined deciding to flee or stay to fight So casting all his plans aside, he left his family And bought a ticket North and burned his free pass overseas But really (s)he’s no different than any of the rest That multitude of others who settled for much less Trading what they hoped for when young and still naïve For instead a lifetime of unfulfilled dreams The lady moves in elegance, service with a smile In thirty years that woman hasn’t slowed at all And everybody knows her, at least that’s what they think But the truth inside her is much different indeed She started at the Café back in 1970 Just some spending money for a high school teen She had no thought of staying, she had far too many plans But sometimes life surprises, and her dreams slipped through her hands And casting all her plans aside for her new family She quit on school and her career for boyfriends and babies So no matter what you’re doing, no matter what your age Hold on to your innocence; hold on to your dreams
