Lyrics
I can hear the whistle blow, across the farms and fields. Calls to mind a love way back with a hurt that never healed. Brings to mind a girl I knew, a girl I once called my own. The train rolls on, to New Orleans, and leaves me standing alone. Dixieland is dark tonight, there’s a dog that barks down the street, He howls and howls and never stops and keeps me from falling asleep. I would go if I knew I could, up to Tennessee, But I know I can’t, so I just sit under the magnolia tree. Twenty years could come and go and time would not be a friend, Love comes and goes and doesn’t pause – only pain does not know an end. I had some friends, or thought I did, only they do not come around. One more winter alone, I know I’ll be living six feet under the ground.
