(Guitar + Boy) = Us vs. Them = (Hatred + Apathy)
Story behind the song
This was a stream-of-consciousness "politics of self" song written shortly after the 2004 elections. I was listening to a lot of Crass and Bob Dylan. It's dedicated to Brian Cummings and the Isaacs brothers.
Andrew Thomas: Vocals, guitar
Lyrics
Well, come on, my boys
We will scream and shout
Until there's no room in us
For death to move about
Because we own this night
And the town weeps oily tears
In fearful anticipation of our canine caress
Let's prove the president right
That his youth need to be locked up or killed
Or else we'll be the death of you all
And the bleak shall inherit the Earth
But you're not allowed
Because we've always been enemies
I just never had the gall to tell you
That everything you stand for
Is everything that I've grown to hate
So we'll break all the windows
And uproot the foundations
Of your churches and your deepest belief
What lurks inside this country boy?
I wasn't raised on no Nationalism
Sweet subversion is all that I offer
And the sweetest subversion
Is the kind that's in your mind
Yeah, we're young, and we're strong
And we have all the time
That our enemies wish we didn't have
To brood and to suffer
And to polish our scars
And make a gun out of paper
And a bullet out of words
We're gonna kill the lame horse
And end all the suffering
And break our own knees
So we kneel before no king
And this town in my dreams
Is nothing but a mudslick
A ghost and a memory
So burn, Branson, burn
You're the perfect effigy
Of the imagery of the rivalry
Between them and me
What lurks inside this country boy?
I was raised on Cash with a capitol "C"
Sweet subversion is all that I offer
