The Bush Administration & Double Speak
the ANGRY MINUTE is heard Tuesday Nights on WCCO-AM 830 Dark Star. .... .... Bush. the idiot. George W. Bush, appropriation, experimental, turntablism,
Lyrics
So by now you’ve heard, President Bush has signed a reform-bill that will now allow him to run for a Third term.
But before you head to the belltower with your Winchester, let me explain to you how easily you were fooled with what should be clearly a fib.
It comes courtesy of The Bush Administration, really, who have single-handedly championed the use of double speak, the nod to George Orwell’s double think, which is intended to deliberately mislead, most times by stating the exact opposite.
But what is really the difference between Irony and Doublespeak.
Saturday, we celebrated 40 years of the Freedom of Information Act, a law intended to give the ordinary citizen the power to scrutinize government documents. On the very same day, the Pentagon refused a request by The Associated Press to release information about the identities of Guantanamo detainees. Sure, that’s irony, but tell me who was the original co-sponsor of the law back in 1966:

Yep. Donald Rumsfeld himself. Now THAT’S irony.
This is Doublespeak.

John Stauber & Sheldon Rampton have already pinpointed many of these in a piece called the Fog Of War Talk. The concept of Axis of Evil suggests an alliance between Iran Iraq & North Korea, all three of which for the most part hate each other, and form no such alliance, yet, the implication is made, and we sit back and accept it.
Coalition of the willing. Smart bombs. Friendly fire. All Double Speak. But the categorical illustration comes from the bossman himself…
[audio] War on Terror
Yeh, I always knew it took a War to take care of Terror?!
And this?
[audio]
Well neither, ya see, there’s a Third Category in this Administration, it’s called stupidity.
