Traditional acoustic guitar styles
I'm trying to use audio in conjunction with tabs I've done to better explain playing traditional fingerstyle guitar.

Story behind the song
A brief instructional demo recording to go with a tab.

(Tabbed on Notepad using Courier New 10 Font) "I'M SO GLAD" LICKS (In the style of Skip James) I have done a simple Sound-Click sound-byte to go along with this. In that sound-bite I played the theme's main licks through a few times and then played it very slowly and more simply trying to show how the treble-lines are timed using an alternating-thumb bass-line as they are being played. The easiest way to start off is to use the thumb and index to do simple "pinches" on both the bass-line note and brushing the treble 1,2,3-strings in the proper timing. As you get more familiar it will become much easier and you can use more variety in the rhythms as you play. I tried to tab very close to my Sound-Click sound byte but it may not be exact. However it should be very close. Close enough for you to understand what I'm trying to do. Simple alternating-bass line played by your thumb... D|------------------------------------------------ A|------------------------------------------------ F|------------------------------------------------ D|----0-------0-------0-------0-------0----------- A|------------------------------------------------ D|-0------0-------0-------0-------0--------------- Now here are the treble string positions (You can use only the 1 and 3 strings if you want or use the 1,3 and 4 (which Skip usually did). Either way sounds good. I advise starting using the 1 and 3 at first and then add the 4 after you get familiar with the tune if you want to. D|--/4---2---0-----7---7---5----5-4--4-2--2-0----------- A|------------------------------------------------------ F|--/4---2---1-----7---7---5----5-4--4-2--2-1----------- D|--/4---2---0-----7---7---5----5-4--4-2--2-0----------- A|------------------------------------------------------ D|------------------------------------------------------ Now put those together, both the thumb-bass and the treble notes, using "pinches" in the correct timing, using your index finger to brush across the 1,2,3 (and 4 if you want) while your thumb plays. Very simplified it is sort of like this. (I'll leave out the 4th string below.) D|-/4--------2--------0-------------7-------7-------5------------- A|--0--------0--------0-------------0-------0-------0------------- F|-/4--------2--------1-------------7-------7-------5------------- D|------0--------0--------0-----0-------0-------0-------0------0-- A|---------------------------------------------------------------- D|--0--------0--------0------0------0-------0-------0------0------ D|--4---------4---2-------------2----0---------------- A|--0---------0---0-------------0----0---------------- F|--4---------4---2-------------2----1---------------- D|---------------------------------------0-----0------ A|-----0------0--------0--------0--------------------- D|--0-----0-------0--------0---------0------0--------- Now that is the sort of rhythm you need to use... The thumb is always playing a pretty steady "one-and-two-and-one-and-two-and-" as your index finger pinches the first three (or more) strings. If you want, you can allow your thumb on the 4th-string beat to brush not only the 4th-string but the three as well if you want. It produces some nice over-tones and variations as you play. Below is the treble-line that starts at the 12th-fret and descends. I won't take the time to show the thumb-picked note in them. You can just apply the same thumb techniques of the previous tab-line to this one. There are several minor variations. I'll show two of them... D|-12--12--11----11--10---10--9---9--7---5---3---2---0-- A|------------------------------------------------------ F|-12--12--11----11--10---10--9---9--7---5---3---2---1-- D|------------------------------------------------------ A|------------------------------------------------------ D|------------------------------------------------------ Here's another. Similar but a little mor
