Story behind the song

This song is about the frustrations of a relationship where you feel terribly inadequate because your partner is so wonderfully perfect. This means that you have a somewhat mixed-up view of the relationship, and tend to feel like you’re ruining absolutely everything. Consequently, everything you say comes out wrong, which you want to crucify yourself for. It’s a song about arguments, and apologising for them. The bridge ‘I’m gonna.. ..not mine to change’ comes out in a slightly accusatory way, but it’s actually meant to be a promise based on reality - I’ve screwed up, and while I wish I could alter that, I can’t - but I can do my best to be worth your time.
