Story behind the song
Many people think this is one of my best songs. I like it too. I've always heard it as a three-part harmony thing, and I'm working on that with Home Studio (now that I know how to 'punch in' to fix my vocal mistakes, the perfect Graham Nash top harmony is just days away). I'll upload the harmony version as soon as I know it's right. This is a studio demo from 1980 with Rob Simbeck and myself on guitars. Alas, only a cassette has survived, so the audio is not the best.
Lyrics
I Can't Read Your Mind If I'm wearing out my welcome You can tell me so No one ever guaranteed That love will grow If it's something that I'm doing Maybe I can change Or maybe something else Will have to be arranged CHORUS: But if you tell me how you feel We can try to deal with it together Who know what we'll find? But if you keep it all inside of you How will I know what to do? Baby, I can love you But I can't read your mind If we've both made every effort And still something fades away Maybe you should act like you've got Nothing to say Conversation so one-sided Cannot be what's real Still I can't deny the message That your eyes reveal CHORUS You may think our story's over Maybe that is true Maybe we'll both set our sights On something new There are things that last forever Sometimes love is one But sometimes love can end Before it's even begun CHORUS Words and Music by Bruce Irving © 1978
