Story behind the song
Based on a true story about a roadhouse in Iowa during the prohibition era that was located on the Frankfort Township line and anytime the owner was tipped off on a raid he would move the whole operation across the line to another building. The name of the joint was "The Pig and the Whistle".
Lyrics
The Pig and the Whistle Bowman & Brown There’s a place close to town where a hard workin’ man likes to go. To drink corn whisky and the girls, they dance real slow. Don’t tell my wife. Don’t tell my boss. Now don’t tell my preacher, he’ll just say I’m lost. At the Pig and the Whistle on the Frankfort Township line. Ol’ Joe’s got some cards and a well worn hot set of dice. The church folk say Ol’ Joe’s got the devil’s eyes. Don’t tell the cops, won’t do you no good. He’ll move it ‘cross the road to a new neighborhood. At the Pig and the Whistle on the Frankfort Township line. (break, verse) The roadhouse is jumpin’ and it’s early on a Saturday night. The money is loose and the boys are comin’ to life. The piano is a poundin’, hear the banjo ring. If you’ve got a little money you can do anything. At the Pig and the Whistle on the Frankfort Township line. Don’t tell the cops, won’t do you no good. He’ll move it ‘cross the road to a new neighborhood. At the Pig and the Whistle on the Frankfort Township line. At the Pig and the Whistle on the Frankfort Township line.
