Do you have an intuitive dislike for those who push you to buy crap that you don't need or want?
(Including your music diet.) Well, here's the song for YOU!
Heavy-handed acoustic guitar rock, with shades of John Hiatt-esque vocals (I've been told).
Hullo Folks,
Just beginning to cobble this page together, so bear with me.
Being a lyric-lover, I attempt to put as much thought into that portion of tunage as musical arrangements. Judge for yourself if that is successful or not. ;o)
I think you'll find most of my songs to be of an "Americana" type in general flow. I do like songs with forward momentum, but an occasional ballad will sneak in from time to time.
Working on album #2 (Strange Spaces) in slow stages, but we'll get there! Mo' later...
Story behind the song
Who knows what evil lurks in the mind of Bill?
We just find him an insightful guy with cool musical instincts and searing, acidic lyrical bents. (Watch out Madison Ave., we're comin' for you!) Our fearless DX leader!
This is also from our interstate collab of 2000 at [the famous] Zing Studios in Westfield, MA.
Good tunes, good session!
Personnel:
Bill Morse: Lead vocal, keys
backup vox: Bill Morse, Algie Powers, Ozone Pete
Jerry Waggoner: electric rhythm & slide guitar
Ozone Pete: acoustic rhythm guitar
Gene Lavoie: bass
Jim Walsh: drums
Lyrics
Marketing Man
Meet Blake, he’s a marketing man; last year he scored 90 grand,
But no satisfaction…
‘Got a taste of the corporate carrot; just a nibble but he’s not gonna share it,
No satisfaction…
He ‘paid to find out how much lyin’, the firm can do ‘til sheep stop buyin’,
No satisfaction…
He’ll do anything it takes in his upward climb; he fools most of the people most of the time,
But no satisfaction…
He’s doin’ it to me and you;
‘Buy anything he tells us to;
‘Makes us scared that we won’t fit in,
Which is still the original sin.
But we dance to his tune; this Pied Piper knows,
That a marketin’ man sold the Emperor’s new clothes….
As he claws his way to the top; he’s a winner and he never gonna stop;
But in spite of his swollen pride, he suspects there’s nothin’ inside;
So he buys a new car, but he still can’t sleep, he’s come pretty far, but it doesn’t come cheap, how much you wanna bet, he’ never gonna get….
No satisfaction…
[the] Loan’s approved on his gray Mercedes; clever way to impress the ladies;
No satisfaction…
He markets himself and he smugly smirks; the sad thing is, that it usually works;
No satisfaction…
…(not in the long run)
…(adds up to nothing)
…(can’t take it with you)
…(maybe just a little)
…(no, no, never, never)
…(just can’t by it)
:
“Blake old buddy. [It’s] Bill; have I got a song for you; this one’s a winner! Yeah, big…I can see heavy rotation on MTV. Groove?…Massive! It’s called, “Marketing Man”….No, it’s not a love song; I’d say it’s sort of a “social conscience sort of a position; that stuff’s makin’ a comeback! Can’t you see a very “sincere” ad campaign in Billboard and ‘Stone? …Right; make it seem like it’s not hype. …Huh? Well, nothing’s written in stone… Changes? Sure I can make changes… What?…. Hmmm… Blake, you’re beautiful! I love it!….
