Hi folks. I have added a lot of videos recently. Please take a look!
Hi folks, This site acts as a personal archive of my work. So you'll find my best recordings here as well as some pretty crappy ones. The earliest recordings here were made on simple cassette decks, others were made on mobile phones, some are live recordings made at various gigs over the years, a handful were made in small recording studios, but most of the more recent ones were made at home on a Zoom portable studio, which itself is now rather ancient! If you like a song and want to download it, click on 'Full song info' for that song and you will see the download link. You can also read the lyrics and any background information on the songs that I may have added. All my music is available for free - enjoy :) cheers, Charles

Story behind the song
It was 1973 and I was living in a flat in Shepherd's Bush in London and working as a ward clerk in St George's hospital at Hyde Park Corner when I wrote and recorded this song. This is the original version as captured on my old cassette deck. After living in rural Wales living in London was a downer. I used to cycle to work through Hyde Park to get a taste of greenery for my soul. Travelling on buses or tubes with a bunch of mainly sad looking commuters was depressing! I got out when I could. The picture shows me out walking on the Sussex Downs the same year I wrote the song. Note the long hair, bell bottom jeans, aviator glasses, hippie shoulder bag and a batik shirt from Malaysia!
Lyrics
Give me a space in the country A place to call my own I don't want a lot of money And I don't want a telephone Fly me up to the mountains Roll me down to the sea Somewhere I can be lonely Somewhere I can be free Cause I'm in town with the bed-sitter blues Brought down by the 9 o'clock news Looking round for my travelling shoes again The city's such a bad dream I wanna be somewhere green Somewhere country clean! Country clean! Country clean! I'd like peacocks in my garden Hilltops for a wall Cypress trees and cottage cheese A secret waterfall But I'm in town with the bed-sitter blues Brought down by the 9 o'clock news Looking round for my travelling shoes again The city's such a bad dream I wanna be somewhere green Somewhere country clean! Country clean! Country clean! Country clean! Country clean! Country green! Joni - the city sure don't look so pretty to me No no - oh no no no City work and city dirt City slaves to city ways City smell and city hell I wanna go down the road Till I can see no houses And I can't see no feet And I can't see no streets And I can see trees And I can see where I please I wanna run down a hillside With the wind in my hair Feeling the air Feeling the air Ooo country clean! Country clean! Country clean! Country clean! Oh country clean! In town with the bed-sitter blues Brought down by the 9 o'clock news Looking round for my travelling shoes Again...
