Story behind the song
It is obviously about a person's loss but the "hook" line actually came out of conversation that had nothing to do with tragic loss. But as I thot about the line that day it evolved into something else.
Lyrics
Today I fed the cat for the first time in my life And swept a few cornflakes off the floor This afternoon I went to school to pick up both our kids They never said a word from door to door Tonight we’ll set a table with one less dinner plate And try to talk about their day at school Then I’ll go to bed and live the nightmare one more time Cause tomorrow I won’t wake up next to you CHORUS Tomorrow I won’t wake up next to you And there’s not a single thing that I can do I hold our kids real tight as I kiss them both good night And tell them that somehow we’ll make it through But the empty place beside me will remind me every time That tomorrow I won’t wake up next to you V.2 The people all mean well when they ask how I have been I smile and answer questions one by one They don’t know the pain that they’re stirring deep within The feelings that I’ve been left all alone I try to keep from doing things that call to mind your love I try to keep my mind on something new But then I see your picture and it hits me once again Tomorrow I won’t wake up next to you (CHORUS) BRIDGE When we made our vows for better or for worse I promised I’d be true till death should part But I didn’t know it meant a trip behind a hearse Or that I’d always have a broken heart FINAL CHORUS Cause tomorrow I won’t wake up next to you And there’s not a single thing that I can do I hold our kids real tight as I kiss them both good night And tell them that somehow we’ll make it through But the empty place beside me reminds me every time That tomorrow I won’t wake up next to you
