Lyrics
The heroes presented in the two tales, Beowulf and First Knight, are both very interesting characters that are worthy of investigation. their deeds are now quite literally the stuff of legend and their tales have lasted for a thousand years or more. so the question must be asked, what was it about these two heroes, what of their supposed deeds and accomplishments have caused their names to endure through the centuries. There must be some common traits to these two legendary figures, for they have both arrived in our time with nearly the same sort of status. Along with these similarities there must also be some significant differences in these two characters for they come to us from very different points in time and in different circumstances. These two heroes are Beowulf in the epic poem Beowulf and Sir Lancelot in the movie based on Arthurian legend, First Knight. There are some striking similarities between the characters Beowulf and Lancelot. Aside from the obvious characteristics such as them both being young males, they are both gifted with unique abilities in regards to their fighting abilities. they are both stronger than the any fighter that they come into contact with throughout their journeys. For the most part they seem to vanquish their opponents with an almost supernatural power and grace. These traits make them both of these heroes appear to be "Larger than life" and greater than those who surround them. Another similarity between these two is that they both give have an innate sense of honor that is evident through their actions. For example Beowulf returns to aid of the Danes to because of his fathers involvement with the Danes so he honorably and freely gives his services to aid them. Lancelot offers his services to King Arthur freely and also earlier in the story with no regard for his own safety he travels to Malagant's hideaway to rescue the lady Guinevere. Accompanying these similarities, however, there are also great differences in these two characters. One of the greatest differences between these two heroes and their tales is the involvement of the supernatural. In Beowulf's tale there is much involvement of the supernatural, everything from the enemies he fights to the near godly feats of strength he performs. Lancelot's tale by comparisons is much more down to earth and realistic. While Lancelot does posses highly developed combat skills and grace, his abilities are a far cry from being labeled supernatural and the enemies he fights are none other than mortal man. Another key difference between these two heroes is their heritage, on one hand Beowulf is the son of the king of the Geats, he has the blood of royalty in his veins. On the other hand Lancelot is a drifter, traveling from place to place fighting to earn money, he has no royal blood flowing through in him.
