Bio of LaurensAbout "Laurens":At the age of seven I started taking keyboardclasses, although I had little discipline I found myself constantly drawn to the creative process. At first I began translating my dad's cd's to dutch, this way learning English. Soon I started writing my first lyrics and poets. When the final exams on the keyboardclass had been succesfully ended, I quit. I felt the need to be more of a creator instead of a learner. Soon I played in a young alternative coverband. All about the age of fourteen we barely had any idea what we were doing.Listening to our first indie and hardcore cd's our own music changed, combined with my lyrics en compositions (and those of the guitarplayer), our own songs took over. But in this new genre I found myself confused, as a keyboardplayer I had little knowledge of what to play, especially in a post-hardcore band. Now at the age of eightteen I attended at the Academy for Popculture, a music academy with a broad perspective. I learned to exploite my creative abilities with theory, technique and practice. My role as a serious keyboardplayer made a complete one-eighty. At first I only benevited from this in the band. Using more difficult pianopieces, compositions, synthesizers and picking up other instruments, such as bluesharp. But soon I began writing some solo-material, experimenting with live recording and looping, controlling up to six different instruments at the time. And this is where I am now, losing all control in the avand-garde post hardcore band: "Daybreak, Thin Air" and starting of with my solo-carreer in "Laurens"About "White walls (with broken tiles)"Inspired by months of listening to various postrock-bands the sound and style had to be a blend of personal musical development in chase of full self-expression. Around the time the assignment of recording a full-on professional song quite a sad development took place. A very dear friend of mine had found what seemed to be the love of her life, the only problem was that he lived at the other side of the Atlantic. What always had been interesting was the fact that we didn’t knew anything about eachother, we’ve only met twice. But ups and downs in our digital contact were always amazing. After three months my friend made a decision, she were to sail after her love. Fed by a powerfull sadness and maybe even a little of jealousy I decided to create a musical piece which I would dedicate to her, both showing my grief and affection. In this I wanted to isolate four abstract thoughts or feelings, namely; loneliness, my pride towards her, our nostalgia and the tension of goodbye. The first half of the song is fully electronic all created by synthesizers, the spoken word is performed by Leontien Herkelman. “We were the only ones left at the enclosure, staring at empty hallways with English-green floors and white walls with broken tiles. Through the rusted cellbars I tracked all endless corridors, secret pathways and shortcuts. I found you hiding inside the smallest box of light, in the midst of a messy corner. Every once in a while I checked if you were ok and sometimes you followed a few of my steps, but never to hold my skinny hand. I told you about earlier days when I was an islander, a constant flow of sea and sand. Corres me with your wind and warmth. Since days had left their names and I forgot about you, I woke up with my palms bleeding. I had been dreaming you were leaving and in my sleep I had mistaken a set of cellbars for your hands and eyes and gripped them till all was red and brown. A note in my pocket with handwritten: “I’m sorry we never got to know eachother, but we are both islanders, I’m sure. I took somebody’s hand and followed his steps to the exit. If you make it alive, you can meet me at the beach where I will watch the wind chase away the sand and storm rage over the waves. I will never forget you”The story resembles again all four emotions we shared. Resembled by two wandering souls in an broken down labyrinth-building In the second part of the song it shifts to an instrumental epic. Drums are performed by Simon van der Heide and saxophone by Elske de Walle. In this part I tried to express a more dramatic feel. An american slow-motion fullcolor goodbye. Finally the artwork, with the rough materials and “messy” look I sort of wanted to hide the content, make it more personal and making the song more nostalgic.Feel free to e-mail me about anything
