Story behind the song
At 8 minutes long, "Pan" is the longest song on Desires. Originally titled "Tinkerbell-Pan" for the two central characters, "Pan" was a song where the lyrics preceeded the melody. Spawning a kind of sequel to the classic tale of "Peter Pan," the song investigates the characteristics of deception and affection, making the plot line not quite so child's play. Our young protagonist realizes his affection is unrequited (a common theme in When Desires Collide) and tries to move on. Wendy realizes this and tries to win him back so as to retain her "control." Enter Tinkerbell, the beloved fairy, who attempts to guide Pan onto a wiser, and not-so-turbulent path. Pan, however, is prone to fates of which are not so kind - losing himself once more, this time to a mermaid. Essentially, the song tries to capture Pan as a human being. He isn't perfect and he makes mistakes. The other characters in "Pan" are equally identifiable - Wendy with her inability to return Pan's affection, but not wanting to lose his "friendship"; Tinkerbell with her desire to set Pan on the right path but also losing herself along the way. Everything is a vicious cycle, especially where deception and delusion are involved, and no one is spared, particularly in "Pan."
Lyrics
In the tale of flying hooks and daggers Wendy has left the isle of youth She finds comfort in the arms of Daniel And Pan wonders what he's supposed to do Peter Pan bumps into a fairy Fairy Tink says Wendy cannot fly Wendy suddenly questions Pan's coldness And Tinkerbell will not let him reply We tumble on the ground expecting answers Searching for truth that dwells within Delusion lurks in every hidden corner Circling us around to start again Tinkerbell helps Peter through a slaughter Secrets told in every twisted way Tinkerbell stops sparkling any further Peter wonders why she's gone away Peter blinds himself with fish-faced mermaid And Tinkerbell just does not understand Wendy and the mermaid seem to shun her But Tink will not relent to Pete's command We tumble on the ground expecting answers Searching for truth that dwells within Delusion lurks in every hidden corner Circling us around to start again Wounded soul creates a plastic sequel The island of youth crumbles from within And Pan sparkles some pixie dust on water And Tink is wondering how to start again We tumble on the ground expecting answers Searching for truth that dwells within Delusion lurks in every hidden corner Circling us around to start again
