Story behind the song
Kirk Kelly's update of the Joe Hill's tribute to Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, written on death row shortly before his execution in Utah in 1915 following a murder conviction based entirely on circumstantial evidence. Hill and other members of the IWW - International Workers of the World (aka "Wobblies") were in Utah supporting striking coal miners.
Lyrics
There are women of every distinction In this cruel world as everyone knows. Some are living in beautiful mansions Or wearing the finest of clothes. There are blue-blooded queens and princesses With their charms made of diamond and pearl. But the only thoroughbred lady Is the rebel girl. Chorus- Rebel girl, rebel girl To the working class she is a precious pearl. She brings courage pride and joy To the fighting rebel boy. They've joined before, but we need some more To fight for the workers of the world. 'Cause it's fun to fight for freedom With your rebel girl. Her Hands may be hardened by labor And her dress may not be very fine. But a heart in her bosom is beating That is true to her class and her kind. The grafters in terror are trembling When her spite and defiance is hurled. 'Cause the only thoroughbred lady Is the rebel girl.
