Conceived in what would seem like the least likely area for a metal band, Blackseed arose in Northwest Alabama. Comprised of guitarist Ryan Fowler, drummer Brandon Baughn, bassist Cory Lockhart, and singer Eric Watley, Blackseed seeks to bring new life to the South with a sound that combines elements of 80’s metal with those of modern metal, creating a unique signature sound unlike that of other new bands.
Blackseed began as the brainchild of Ryan Fowler and Brandon Baughn, who began playing music with each other in their early years of high school. Years later, and after many lineup changes, Lockhart entered the band as the bassist in 2002, nearly completing the band. The three played together for almost a year under the name Identity Crisis, while searching for a vocalist to fit their distinctive sound.
In November of 2003, Watley auditioned for Blackseed, having heard of them from a former friend of the band. Knowing instantly that Watley was the voice they had been searching for, Blackseed immediately began working feverishly to prepare themselves to begin playing gigs together. On December 5, 2003, Blackseed played their first gig together at a Battle of the Bands competition in Winfield, Alabama.
Blackseed has since been on a relentless warpath to play at as many venues in the surrounding area, gaining more fans each time they play.
