Lyrics
Met an old songwriter at a roadside bar No band backing him up Just him and his guitar You could tell by his lyrics He’s been solo a while Sat next to him at the bar afterwards And said I like your style _______________________________________ He said I got songs about my younger days Partying with my friends Songs about when the drinking continued But the good times seemed to end __________________________________ Songs about cold beer and warm tears Together they make up my life Songs about the first time I held my daughter Songs about burying my wife ________________________________________ CHORUS: Wrote them in a notebook And placed them on the shelf Used to write what people wanted to hear Now, I just write for myself _____________________________________ Some tried to buy ‘em some steal ‘em Some people just don’t believe a word But when you play in bars A drinking man likes songs he’s already heard _____________________________________________ Best thing about my songs Is I lived them - every last one If I could wish one thing for you Is for you to live your own songs before you’re done __________________________________________ CHORUS: Write them in a notebook Place them on a shelf Don’t write to please anyone Just write for yourself ______________________________ It was a few weeks later when I walked into that old bar They told me he died But onstage was a notebook and a guitar _____________ A note said by now I’m dead and gone Don’t want the songs to die on the shelf Through the notebook I’ll live on Just remember to add some yourself ____________________________________ CHORUS: Write them in a notebook Place them on a shelf Don’t write to please anyone Just write for yourself
