Semi-literate, godless rock and roll, tender ballads, and a song about a chicken.
Spike and Mallets is the ongoing project of singer/songwriter Jeff Keeran. For several years now Tony Keats has been playing guitar and Kyle Walsh has been pounding the drums. They are identical twins, born to separate mothers on different days. Brent Rawlings has been spotted playing bass in the band and engineering what might just turn out to be their next record. Keeran has been performing and writing since the late 80's, embracing the angry pop of Costello, Dylan, and Lennon. He's still angry today,...he just has to keep his voice down or he'll wake the baby. In the early nineties Keeran was the front man of Celebrity Toast and Jam, a Nashville rock band that caught a good deal of attention from fans and from "the industry". With a major record deal pending, youthful impatience and timeless arrogance caused them to record and release an excellent indepent recording (Large/surefire records) and move to the Bay Area. Youthful impatience then caused them to break up and go their seperate ways. Keeran stayed in California for several years before finally moving back to Tennessee. Enter Spike and Mallets...

Story behind the song
Evolution.
Lyrics
The first time that I saw cold steel it was making a mockery of my wooden shield I thought we had more time to lead the simple life there was a little spark and it started a little fire now it seems we're cooking every meal how did we ever live without the wheel? You bet jurassic if you can't keep up you will go the way of the world before you were a monkey in your maker's tree I have seen the illustration with an ape leading the way we parade into the future evolving take away the fact that we are hairless except for Brent we can't climb trees even with our glasses we can't see that we still live with all the old impulses we just don't know what to do no one was watching as the trees crept in the pools of sunlight that filter through them are soft and green is this a dream? how long have I been asleep? I thought we had more time
