Story behind the song
My cousin Steven and his best friend were killed in a car accident near their homes in 1997, they were 19 & 21 years of age. Their parents launched a charity in memory of their sons 'The Best Mates Trust' based in Haverhill, Suffolk, to help young people who are disadvantaged by injury, disability or poverty, and as a way of remembering their sons in a positive way. We wrote Where Are You? and recorded it for the charity to help with fundraising. So far the Best Mates Trust has raised many thousands of pounds and donated it to various sectors of the local community and individuals in crisis.
Lyrics
'Where Are You?' (Dedicated to Steven Bowers and Ben Rowlands There is now a permanent flower garden by the roadside where Steven and Ben passed away. Recall the day you passed away When they told us that you were gone... Tried hard to make it through the day Gotta find the strength to carry on Are you waiting up above? Sleeping on a cloud in summer skies Do you still feel our love Love never dies... Where are you? Where are you? Where are you? Where are you? Saw the flowers by the road The road that took you in the summer sun We have to bear this heavy load Until time itself has done Guess we must go on We must go on for you How can we go on? Without you... We see the people pass you by Don't spare a moment in a busy day They never stop to wonder why There's flowers blossoming along the way © Maria Daines/Paul Killington
