Story behind the song

i wrote this song in just under ten minutes on Tegan's front porch just after buying my first electric guitar.

Lyrics

the sun is setting and it's October again.
i keep my hat on but there's not much to defend
within.
and it's been so long that i can't remember being warm.
i think it's time i sell off everything that i own.

and Tegan's smoking but next week she's gonna quit.
i guess i should too but i just don't give a shit for that.
she sleeps alone but she's never lonely.
and i've got the couch but i think i need much more than that.

we spent the whole day just staring into the sun.
our necks had stiffened from that constant looking up above.
and we traveled nowhere but we've got spots on our eyes.
i think distraction is the best way to get by.

and she smiles in secret cause she's got everybody fooled.
